Call for Entries

Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church (HVUUC) is seeking artwork to use for a new church banner as well as on church promotional materials. Artists who are members or friends of the church are encouraged to submit work in any media, including (but not limited to) painting, drawing, mixed media, and photography.

Up to five designs will be selected. Artists will not receive compensation but will retain their original artwork. HVUUC will receive exclusive permission to use images of the artwork to support and promote the church and its mission. All images of artwork will be attributed to the artist.

Important Dates:
  • May 15, 2012: Entries must be turned in or postmarked by this date.
  • June 30, 2012: Artists will be notified by this date.
  • Oct. 31, 2012: Final artwork is due for photography and printing.
There is no predetermined theme for the artwork, but it could reflect important aspects of our church/region, such as:
  • A visual representation of our principles, being a welcoming congregation, standing on the side of love, open hearts and open minds, freedom of belief/conscience, a free and responsible search for truth, the individual spiritual journey in community.
  • The chalice.
  • Our physical geographic/ecological space (the mountains, trees, etc.).
Things to consider:
  • For banners, dark or bright backgrounds usually make a stronger impact.
  • This should make a dramatic statement from a distance, but can have details that emerge when one moves closer to the piece. However, the image should not be too busy.
  •  “Holston Valley UU Church” and “Northeast TN” will be printed prominently on the General Assembly banner, so part of the artwork might be obscured. Other applications, such as notecards, will not include text on the image.
Here are some examples of other congregations' banners (HVUUC's current, well-worn banner is here, too--see if you can spot it):

Please do not copy any of these images for your design—we are providing them so you can see what is more or less effective. HVUUC’s banner will be printed on high-quality fabric by Spoonflower.

If you have questions, please feel free to ask them in the comment section here. Cindi Huss or Christine Barger will answer them and everyone will have the benefit of the same information.

Thank you, and good luck!
